Homeowners Can Now Appeal Their Recent County Assessments

Because the housing market has changed so much, everyone is finding property values changing quickly, and Salt Lake City, Utah residents are feeling it just as much as the rest of the country.  But now, property owners can appeal the county’s assessment if they don’t agree with it.

Sometimes it’s confusing to many people.  As property values change, so do property tax rates.  In many cases, however, the land value can go up, while the structure value drops or vise versa.  There are many factors the county assessors will take into account; such as where the property is located, what attractive and unattractive features are near, demand, Interstate access, schools and shopping areas.  It’s all a complex formula.

So, if you’re a homeowner that is experiencing assessment shock, you can appeal what the county has assessed your property for.  But remember, in many cases, the increase of taxes is for many reasons - your property values are not the only one.
